When I heard New Jersey was getting its very own wildlife guide a few weeks ago, I called the local bookstore and ordered it pronto. This soft cover guide is 160 pages that includes 87 of the best and most unusual wildlife viewing areas, sanctuaries, parks, trails, centers, refuges and education centers. 120 sites were evaluated and 87 of them are highlighted here. That’s a lot of fauna and flora that remains practically a secret from many of our citizens.

Did you ever wonder what the money from those “Conserve Wildlife in New Jersey” license plates goes to? Well now you know-this book was made possible in large part due to the license plate fund and also from that little box on your state income tax you check off that says funds for New Jersey wildlife preservation. Additionally, many state and federal government organizations, non-profit groups and sponsors supported this guide. And note the cover stamp saying that $1.00 of this book’s price will go to wildlife conservation efforts in New Jersey, that makes you feel good when you buy it.

Laurie Pettigrew divides New Jersey into 8 physiograhic regions, areas that were formed in our geologic history. Once you go to a region, you’ll discover illustrations and photographs depicting the general outlay of that area, and some photos of wildlife to look for. She gives tips on what to look for, what time of the year is best to visit, and suggestions on the time of day to observe wildlife. She provides descriptions of the terrain and facilities. The guide also provides you with directions on how to get to the sites and phone numbers to find out about tours, parking, lectures and the hours of operations.

The beauty of nature preserved in our state has been fought for, by many people throughout our history. If you haven’t had a chance to take your family or friends out to enjoy it lately, this very affordable book is a great guide to locate some incredible retreats. Bring your kids along and let them see for themselves that we are not just people riding the highways and shopping the malls, there’s beauty and diversity right here in New Jersey.

For more information on the book check the online Newsletter of the NJ Fish and Wildlife Service, go to www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/news/guidaval.htm

P.S. You might consider buying a few, it would make a great gift for the Holidays.
