State Park

canal, from Milford to Trenton, and Trenton to New
Brunswick. Picnicking, boat launch, boat and canoe
rentals, fishing, hiking, canoe, and nature trails,
cross-country skiing, small museum in Griggstown.
39. Washington Crossing State Park
(609) 737-0623. Titusville. 990 acres. Visitor center,
picnicking, hiking, nature, and bridle trails,
snowmobiling trails, cross-country skiing, and sledding.
Washington Crossing Natural Area.
40. Institute for Advanced Study
(609) 734-8000. Olden Lane off Mercer Street, Princeton.
800 acres. A think-tank retreat, with 500 acres of woods
and five nature trails.
41. Edison National Historic Site
(908) 736-0550, West Orange. The laboratory where Thomas
Edison invented the movie camera, and his home at
Glenmont.
42. Cheesequake State Park
(908) 566-2161. Matawan. 1,283 acres. Extensive nature
trail system, picnicking, swimming, fishing, ice skating.

43. Gateway National Recreation Area,
Sandy Hook Unit
(908) 872-0115. Part of the 26,000-acre Gateway Area.
Visitor center, swimming, fishing, two one-mile nature
trails, holly forest, picnicking, windsurfing, and park
ranger programs. Lighthouse, Fort Hancock.
44. Monmouth
Battlefield State Park
(908) 462-9616. Freehold. 1,520 acres. Extensive visitor
center features information on the Battle of Monmouth.
Picnicking, hiking, nature, and bridle trails,
snowmobiling trails, and ice skating.

45. Owl Haven Nature Center
(908) 780-7007. Freehold-Englishtown Road, Tennent. In
Monmouth Battlefield State Park, run by the New Jersey
Audubon Society; birding information, home to injured
owls.
46. Allaire State Park
(908) 938-2371. Route 524, Farmingdale. 3,061 acres.
Features a restored bog, iron mining town, small scenic
railroad, and nature center. Picnicking, fishing, hiking,
nature, and bridle trails, canoeing.
47. Cattus Island County Park
(908) 270-6960. Cattus Island Boulevard, Toms River. 497
acres. Prime examples of salt marshes and wetlands.
Hiking trails, boardwalk trail for wheelchairs, nature
trails. Cooper Environmental Center.
48. Island Beach State Park
(908) 793-0506. Route 35, Seaside Park. 3,002 acres.
Picnicking, swimming, boat launch, fishing, nature
center, and trails. Island Beach Northern and Southern
Natural Areas.
49. Double Trouble State Park
(908) 341-6662. Double Trouble and Pine-Keswick Roads,
Bayville. 5,143 acres. Recently restored sawmill. Hiking
and bridle trails, picnicking.
50. Whitesbog Village
(609) 893-4646. Route 530, Browns Mills. 60 acres. Annual
blueberry festival (June 29 this year). Nature tours
offered.
51. Lebanon State Forest
(609) 726-1191. New Lisbon. 32,035 acres. Visitor center,
picnicking, swimming, hiking, nature trails, cranberry
bogs, and the Cedar Swamp Natural Area.
52. Rancocas State Park
(609) 726-1191. 1,252 acres. Westhampton. Small boat
launch. Includes Rancocas Indian Reservation, home to the
Powhatan Renape Nation, with museum open limited hours.
53. New Jersey Audubon Rancocas Nature
Center
(609) 261-2495. 794 Rancocas Road, Mount Holly. In the
state park, exhibits, information, and hiking trails.
