54. New Jersey State Aquarium

million renovation included Ocean Base Atlantic.
Exhibits, hands-on activities, outdoor promenade.
55. Wharton State Forest
(609) 561-0024. Route 572, Hammonton. 110,017 acres. In
the Pinelands; visitor and nature center, picnicking,
swimming, boat launch, boat and canoe rentals, fishing,
hiking (Batona Trail), nature, canoe, and bridle trails,
ice skating, and fishing. Batsto and Oswego River Natural
Areas.
56. Batsto Village
(609) 561-3262. Hammonton. In Wharton State Forest. Site
of the Richards-Wharton Mansion and Ironworks, which
produced ammunition during the Revolution. Demonstrations
of traditional crafts by resident craftspeople.
57. Edwin B. Forsythe National
Wildlife Refuge
(609) 652-1665. Great Creek Road, Oceanville. 40,000
acres. Major stopping point on the Atlantic Flyway.
Eight-mile wildlife drive, plus two short nature trails.
58. Bass River State Forest
(609) 296-1114. Bass Road, New Gretna. 25,685 acres.
Swimming, boating, picnicking, fishing, cross-country
skiing. Absegami, West Plains natural areas; Batona
Trail.
59. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park

Picnicking, lookout point, swimming, fishing; Barnegat
lighthouse.
60. North Brigantine Natural Area
Brigantine Island. 773 acres. Northern 2.5 miles of the
6-mile barrier beach island has been preserved.
61. Marine Mammal
Stranding Center
(609) 266-0538. Brigantine. Rehabilitation facility for
returning stranded mammals to the sea. Its Sea Life
Museum features fish and other marine life, and
educational exhibits.

62. Corson's Inlet State Park
(609) 861-2404. Route 619, south of Ocean City. 341
acres. Birding, small boat launch, fishing, hiking,
designated natural area.
63. Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary
(609) 368-5102. Third Avenue and 114th Street, Stone
Harbor. A 21-acre refuge for birds only; the public can
watch with binoculars from a parking area.
64. Wetlands Institute
(609) 368-1211. Stone Harbor Boulevard, Stone Harbor.
Marsh trails, observation tower, aquarium, gardens, and
special programs. Osprey Nest video camera.
65. Nature Conservancy's Cape May
Migratory Bird Refuge
(609) 785-1735. Sunset Boulevard, next to Cape May Point
State Park. 187 acres. Trail through dunes to the sea.
66. Cape May Bird Observatory
(609) 884-2736. Lighthouse Road, Cape May Point. Operated
by the New Jersey Audubon Society. Information center,
tours, educational programs.
67. Cape May Point State Park
(609) 884-2159. Cape May Point. 190 acres. Visitor and
nature center, historic Cape May Point lighthouse,
birding platform (seasonal hawk watch), picnicking,
fishing, nature trails.
68. Maurice River Cove
Maurice River and Delaware Bay. Site of the spring
migration of millions of shore birds from South America,
coinciding with the annual egg-laying of millions of
horseshoe crabs. Also prime for snow geese migration in
winter. Ancient shell mounds, East Point Lighthouse.
69. Belleplain State Forest
(609) 861-2404. County Road 550, Woodbine. 12,815 acres.
Picnicking, swimming, boat launch and boat rentals,
fishing, hiking, bridle, and nature trails, cross-country
skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, sledding.
70. Parvin State Park
(609) 358-8616. Route 540, Elmer. 1,134 acres. Visitor
center, picnicking, swimming, boat launch, boat and canoe
rentals, fishing, hiking, and nature trails. Parvin
Natural Area.
71. Fort Mott State Park
(609) 935-3218. Fort Mott Road, Salem. 104 acres. Guided
tours of the fort, trails. Facilities for picnicking and
fishing. Temporary visitor center; permanent one is under
renovation.
72. Finn's Point National Cemetery;
Finn's Point Rear Range Light
Cemetery contains the graves of 2,400 Confederate and 300
Union soldiers. Range lights such as Finn's Point were
used in pairs to allow ships to pinpoint their location.
