Sandy Hook: Our Outdoor ClassroomStory by Gladys V.
On October 29, 2002 we went to the Sandy Hook National Park. Our tour guide, Mr. Scott Barnes, talked to us about why birds migrate. The two main reasons birds migrate are #1 because of weather changes or #2 because food becomes scarce. Birds migrate year round, it
doesn't matter which season.
Next, we went outside and looked at the birds and plants at the park. We saw a Turkey Vulture, which has a wingspan of 6 feet. We also saw a Mocking Bird, a Yellow Rump Warbler, and a Kinglet.
Some plants we saw were Spotted
Napweed, Goldenrod, Poison Ivy, Seeders Tree, and some Prickly Pear Cactus. Many of these plants are helpful to birds. Poison Ivy is used for birds to hide in when a predator is attacking them. Birds aren't allergic to Poison Ivy. And birds use Goldenrod as food when they are traveling. Birds use rivers, lakes, and
coastlines to find there way to wherever they are going.
Then we went to plant dune grass at the beach. We used metal sticks to make hole in the sand. We did this by
putting the stick in the sand and turning it in a circular motion. As you move it press it deeper and deeper into the sand. When you
are done stick a piece of dune grass into the
hole, and cover the hole with sand. Our group covered 20 square feet.
The last thing we did was have a beach clean up. We took plastic bags and picked up every piece of garbage. some items we found were plastic bottles and bags,
cigarettes, candy wrappers, and many other things.
