10 Most Beautiful Places in New Jersey
Photographs and text by Walter Choroszewski

Great FallsThe Great Falls, Paterson, Passaic County

Within the heart of Paterson lie the spectacular Great Falls, the center around which this manufacturing city was built. Created from the outflow of the ancient glacial Passaic Lake, this plunging 77-foot cataract in the Passaic River's path to the sea is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. I've photographed the Great Falls from many angles and all possible vantage points, and I am always entranced by the visual contrast between the powerful moving water and its solid brown-rock framework. The falls are especially dynamic after a long period of rain, when the river is high and the water is abundant and thunderous.
