Island Beach
State Park, Berkeley Township, Ocean County
From Seaside Park to Barnegat Inlet,
the thin strand of white-sand beach and rolling dunes
named Island Beach State Park is best known as a summer
day-trip spot along the Jersey Shore. It is, after all,
the longest stretch of public shoreline in New Jersey. I
love the park for its natural beauty, and prefer to visit
in the off-season. The dunes and wetlands on the southern
end of the island are home to an abundant variety of
coastal flora and fauna. I enjoy doing aerial
photography, and as I look down at Island Beach State
Park from a helicopter, I can truly appreciate the
fragile strength of this barrier island facing the
Atlantic.
