Oswego River at
Penn State Forest, Lake Oswego, Burlington County
The vast Pine Barrens contain countless
special locations, many of which I could never explain
how to find because of the intricate network of
arrow-straight white-sand roads that lead to many other
intersecting white-sand roads. I'm always amazed that I
can find my own way out again! There is, however, one
favorite Pinelands location that is fairly easy to
find--an access point of the Oswego River at Penn State
Forest. I have canoed this tea-colored serpentine river
through its mystical cedar groves, and often arrive in
the predawn hours to capture the spectacular sunrise on
Lake Oswego as the early-morning mist emerges from the
mature natural bogs of the forest.
