The Palisades,
Englewood, Bergen County
A complex geological masterpiece formed
from volcanic diabase rock, the Palisades are a natural
national landmark. These 500-foot cliffs extend thirteen
miles, from the George Washington Bridge north into New
York State along the Hudson River. Many people only know
of the Palisades from crossing the George Washington
Bridge; however, one can better appreciate their
magnificence from within the Palisades Interstate Park.
The park road along the base of the cliffs offers a whole
new perspective--up close and personal--as you drive or
hike past the delicate cliff-dwelling plants, birds, and
wildlife. Early morning is the best time here, as the
warm sun bathes the rocks in red light.
